- Anyone have any idea why a (new) USR 28.8 external modem would start file
- transfers at around 2.8K/sec and slowly degrade to 1.3/1.4K/sec? (This
- degradation happens at apr. .1K/2-4 seconds) and consistently happens -
- no matter what time of day - using Netscape 2.0 (even on large - ie:
- >500K xfers)..
-
- The truly bizarre thing is that it seems to level out once it hits
- 1.3/1.4K or so..I know there's no line noise (my first thought was the
- modem was adjusting for a noisy line), as I have a status indicator that
- shows me the number of noisy packets (and it's almost always 0 or 1).
-
- This only happens on my ISP's (Pipeline) server. AOL CRANKS (I
- consistently get around 2.8K/sec from AOL), as does my firewall server,
- Prodigy, etc.
-
- Natch, I'd think it's the Pipeline server, but another user reports his
- Hayes (I think it was an Optima 28.8) works just fine (consistent
- throughput).
-
- PipeLine tech support told me to turn off V.FC (S32=6), which I did..no
- improvement. I also believe I tried S32=22 (disable 33.6, V.FC and
- enable V.8), which made things worse)..
-
- USR Tech Support suggested turning off V.42 (S15=128), but I don't see
- how error correction/compression would affect things..I'd just think it
- would slow everything down! Will try it tonite, tho.
-
- Finally, I have MNP5 and error control turned off (&K0&M0) and am using a
- 16550 UART on a Pentium 90 w/hardware flow control, via RTS/CTS..
-
- I work in the Software industry as a Systems Engineer, so I don't think
- it's anything obvious..(but, I'm not a datacomm guy!)..
-
- Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated! I'm about ready to trade this puppy
- in on a good ole' Hayes.
-
- Thanks -
